Naturally the recent rain played a big part in making the grounds at North Hagley for the first time ever, not rock hard and dangerous for those with weak ankles.
The previous five years has seen amazingly hot weather on tournament day, but today's overcast and cool temperatures made it much easier to play in. Or in my case, to watch from the sidelines.
Thanks to Chief for putting the pinny on and cooking the snags and thanks to the refs who officiated fairly and well.
Thanks to Sumner Sharks. Thanks to Burnside Black Adders. Thanks to Christchurch Canardlys and Thanks to Linwood officially not the Bollocks, but really still are the Bollocks for making yet another reason why Classics Rugby is the best rugby. Thanks also to Keith for turning up, except for those that didn't turn up. We know where you live.
Also thanks to #FUS's new girlfriend Petra for helping with the tucker and the bar and for slapping a few of the boys about with her mighty thighs.
While Linwood keep on keeping the score and claiming the win, it was Classics Rugby who really won on the day.
What a day for footy, albeit pre-season footy.
5 Teams, 2 Refs and a shit load of sausages came together for love and brotherhood and pre season heart stress testing.
Keith, Canardlys, Bollocks, Sharks and Blackadders enjoyed some excellent rugby in stunning conditions at Bob Deans Fields this afternoon with an adjournment to the clubrooms for a few ales and a good catchup chat with old friends. And new friends.
Many thanks of course go to Uncle Phil for organising it once again and for bringing along some excellent and admirable hobbits New Boys. Hopefully they weren't scared off. Many thanks also to those Keiths who returned to Ayr Street. We need you still. Those still playing summer sport, you should at least be fit enough to jump right in to the first game in two weeks.
2-00pm All teams meet at Bob Deans Fields
2-25pm Referees brief on the new rules for 2014
2-30pm Games kick off (draw to follow)
4-00pm (approx) Games finish
4-01pm Beers and BBQ at the HSOB RFC Clubrooms
Teams confirmed: HSOB Keiths, Christchurch Canardlys, Sumner Sharks, Linwood Bollocks, Burnside Possible: Hornby Div 3 Country
At this stage: 20 min "halves", 4 games per team of one half duration (draw will be done Saturday at 2pm)
Intent: This is a warm-up tournament. We all know each other, we are learning the new scrum rules and getting new players and combinations sorted - as well as helping recruitment.
So there are no competition points or sheep stations to win.
We enjoy and we have a good bbq and beer after.
Be good to the refs too - they are helping make the day awesome.
Social: Keiths are arranging a keg or equivalent for the aftermatch and we have a catering bbq sorted. We appreciate other teams supplementing the beers or the bbq as appropriate. Our bar is in the park.
Ayr street changing rooms will be open, but if a nice day, the fields will be good too (pending good weather like last year (fingers crossed). We have arranged rain currently to soften the fields but asked for warmth/sun for next Saturday. Refs and fields are booked.
Bugger me with a pitchfork and twist my nipples into sharpened points of pain, she was a hot day for some footy. She was also a perfect afternoon for some footy, so things evened out.
First of all, a huge slap on the back to Sonny Phil and one of those nods across a room full of people you give someone you recognise but don't remember where from to the Refs who gave up their time to run around in the sun.
Thanks also to the Linwood Bollocks, the Sumner Sharks, the Christchurch Canardlys and Burnside for getting into the spirit of the competition and by all accounts, we've found an experience all teams want to continue next year.
Not that anyone was counting the scores, but we reckon we won more than anyone else so can call ourselves inaugural 5 nation champions. Anyone disagree? No? Didn't think so.
After a couple of beers back in the Keith Pavilion, we all headed back across the park to the clubrooms for more beers and illegal gambling and some good old fashioned shit talking and lie telling.
Also there were the Diamond Harbour boys who played Div 3 and they were very agreeable visitors indeed.
It was great to see New Boys and some returning Keiths putting on the boots alongside plenty of Old Coves.
