Southland have accepted two Ranfurly Shield challenges ahead of next year's Air NZ Cup rugby competition.
They are to put the shield on the line against Heartland provinces North Otago and Wanganui in Invercargill on July 9 and 23 respectively.
Southland won the shield for the first time in 50 years when they beat Canterbury this year.
Wanganui won the Heartland Meads Cup final this year while North Otago were crowned Lochore Cup champions.
"As Meads Cup winners, Wanganui automatically earned the right to challenge, leaving one compulsory challenge spot open. We at Rugby Southland felt that our (Super 14) franchise partnership and traditional pre-season fixture with Lochore Cup winners North Otago, made the first challenge a given,' Rugby Southland chief executive Roger Clark said today.
Both challenges are being played on a Friday to ensure minimal disruption to Southland's club competition.
The United States qualified for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand with a 27-6 victory over Uruguay on Saturday.
The Eagles, who had qualified for all but one of the previous six World Cups, followed up their 27-22 win in last weekend's first leg in Montevideo with a more comfortable win.
Uruguay, who played the last half hour a man short after prop Mario Sagario was sent off, get a second chance to qualify for the World Cup through next year's playoffs.
As in the first leg, the Eagles ran in four tries only this time Uruguay failed to make the late response that saw them recover from a similar 27-6 deficit last weekend.
Tries by flanker Louis Stanhill and wing Kevin Swiryn, who scored two in Montevideo, helped the U.S. to a 13-3 lead at halftime.
Captain Todd Clever made an interception and ran 35 meters to score the third try early in the second half before Sagario was shown the red card.
The Uruguayans fought to get back into the game making light of their numerical disadvantage before flanker Clever scored another try in the dying seconds.
U.S. flyhalf Mike Hercus kicked one conversion and one penalty, while Uruguay fullback Jeronimo Echeverry, who
scored 19 points last weekend, replied with two penalties.
"With just a five-point spread between the teams we have to approach this game as a one-off final," U.S. coach Eddie O'Sullivan said. "As far as we are concerned the score is 0-0 with 80 minutes remaining. It's all to play for."
The Eagles have lost to Uruguay only once in 20 years, and are unbeaten at home.
The Teros dropped both wingers for Alejandro Silveira and Tomas Jolivet in the only changes to the lineup which rallied from 27-6 down to retain hope of making the World Cup.
The winner will join World Cup Pool C with Australia, Ireland, Italy and a European team yet to be determined, while the loser will advance to a second chance in playoffs.
Underwater rugby is pretty simple, teams of 12 (of which 6 can be in the water at a time) battle to get a ball into two metal baskets, set at opposite sides of the pool.
The ball is filled with a saline solution, which makes it heavier than normal water and slowly sinks instead of rising to the surface. This allows strong players to throw and pass it for a few meters, despite the drag of the water. There aren’t many rules in this sport, players have to stop opponents from scoring, at any costs. It’s even permitted to sit in the basket to block a player from scoring, but if you can’t hold your breath long enough, you’ll have to go up for air and leave the “goal” exposed.
Check out the short video at the bottom, to get an idea of how underwater rugby is played.
The Club's argueably greatest player, Andrew Mehrtens has the record for All Blacks points at 967. The Club's former most talked about modern player, Dan Carter is currently 1 point behind Andrew and sits on 966 points from 64 tests.
We should see that record broken in the match against England.
